annual training

scenautics: from the Greek skené (the stage) + nautes (the navigator). The scenaut is the navigator of the scene.

Matilde

Scenautics seeks navigators who can resolve any scenic situation, delivering truth and purity to the audience, whether in the beautiful or the horrible. Who can navigate between different kinds of scene, different emotional and mental environments. Who can travel from the coarsest to the most subtle.

We scenauts celebrate the scenic ritual as a space open to experimentation that frees itself from the labels imposed on it. This ritual is an act of rebellion against banality, where bridges are built between the visible and the invisible. A space where the sacred merges with the mundane and shows an X-ray of what we are, as individuals and as a society.

Improvisation is the compass for navigating the unknown. Developing the ability to think and act in the moment, creating spontaneous scenes full of life. Scenes that can later become a clear and concrete score.

Learning to listen, respond and connect with oneself and with others intuitively, activating a lively state that fiercely drives creativity.

The years of the voyage

year 1 — the scenaut’s journey

Build a solid base through instant creation. Foundations of the scene and ingredients of different techniques: physical theatre, body and voice, butoh, clown.

year 2 — shipwrights of dreams

The process of creating pieces. Understanding and nourishing the phases of the creative process. Each piece is a ship that helps us travel a unique route through dangerous waters.

year 3 — among the mists

Taking shape among the mists. The third horizon of the voyage.

Methodology

monthly gatherings

One weekend a month, from October to June, in intensive format.

care

Understanding each participant’s needs and adapting the right challenges for their development.

safe space

Being able to take risks without fear of consequences. Building a precise map of where we can take risks before an audience.

technique

Building a base of knowledge and practice. The ship is our body, the ocean the immensity of the scene.

theme

Each weekend works on specific themes and formats that foster listening, spontaneity and creativity.

documentation

Maps of the territories explored and a logbook of the voyage to keep the practice alive between gatherings.

Stages of the first year.

The first year sails through four stages, from October to June.

• Port of departure (Oct): crew and ship — being on stage, the hollow body, my first solo
• We hoist the sails (Nov-Dec): seafaring skills — the canvas body, the voice of the body, the 4 persons, the 5 audiences. Open showing in December
• Exploration (Jan-Apr): navigating freedom → the otherworlds → unbridled navigation → synergic crew. Open showing in April
• Return to Ithaca (May-Jun): the return and the gifts. Final showing in a scenic space in June

Who it’s for

Scenauts are people interested in the art of the scene: theatre, dance, performance, music, poetry. Any prior knowledge and technique is welcome and integrated during the voyage. When you embark we will have a meeting to integrate your prior experience and your personal interests.

Commitment is firm and fundamental: your attendance creates a stable group that gives us the trust and support needed to navigate the human immensity. It is not possible to attend isolated gatherings.
