“What is time? If no one asks me, I know. If I wish to explain it to one who asks, I do not know.”

Saint Augustine

Concept and scenic space

APNEIA is an immersion into the borderland between life and death, a conscious act that questions our relationship with time and existence. Through butoh dance and physical theatre, without resorting to words, the piece explores the cycles of existence, drawing inspiration from both the Buddhist philosophy of reincarnation and cellular biological processes: mitosis, meiosis and apoptosis.

The scenic space, divided into three planes by curtains, builds a symbolic route the audience crosses to reach their seats. This initial passage exposes the spectator to small performances representing moments of death, like fragments of memory suspended in time.

The experience continues in three distinct acts, each revealing a different phase of the existential cycle: the first tableau, with black curtains, presents the stripping of the soul from the body; the second, with white curtains, symbolizes the journey through non-life; and the last, against the bare walls of the theatre, shows the ritual of reincarnation where the soul finds a new body.
