The same control mechanisms that keep us sane, healthy and valid in society are the same ones that keep butoh from flourishing. Control is essential to survive, but when is it too much? Too much control strangles the dance, the wild, the beautiful, the unknown.

Butoh arises in a place beyond our reason, beyond the image we hold of our Person. The stronger that image, the weaker the paths that give us access to the source of unlimited dance. During the workshop we practice using madness as a tool, rather than as a prison. This tool lets us open doors that help us crack open our Person, without destroying it.

This absurd, unimaginable world of madness is a fragile paradise. It is essential to create a space of safety in which to leap into the void, working slowly and with great respect for each participant’s possibilities. The way to honor our freedom is to accompany it with an equal measure of responsibility.

• Phobias: beyond fear — from flight to collapse and reconstruction
