bestiary

first you lose your form, then you find a thousand forms.

Matilde

One of the foundations of butoh is that it is the art of becoming: ceasing to be what one is and being something else. Beyond ceasing to be another person, as is done in various theatrical techniques, butoh leads us to become something non-human. To dissolve the meaning of the body until it allows us, poetically, to restructure its matter and be something else — whether something real, poetic or oneiric.

The first step to access the thousand forms of the bestiary is to lose one’s own form. The body is subject to the pressure of sense and meaning — pressure of gender, of age, of profession, of family. Here we turn the body into an abstract entity, stripping it of its function: a body free of humanity.

We will seek becoming in the living beings around us: known and unknown. Animals, insects, plants. Enormous or microscopic beings with whom we share more than 95% of our DNA. Once these materials are found, we will enter their poetic and oneiric world, their shadows and their hidden realities.

The third bestiary opens the door to all kinds of creatures that have inhabited human dreams and nightmares since the beginning of time. Impossible forms and beings with paranormal powers. We will work on our capacity to create new mythological beings or to inhabit those that already exist.

what we’ll work on

  • Dehumanization: losing one’s own form to access the bestiary
  • Natural bestiary: animals, insects, plants — their poetic and oneiric world
  • Imaginary bestiary: creatures of human dreams and nightmares
  • Becoming living non-human matter
  • The body as a territory of total transformation
