In the practice of butoh we must pass through all the layers we have been accumulating over the most essential part of being. Some recognizable, others unknowable. We empty ourselves of ourselves until we can let the mystery in. otherme is the one who pushes the most stubborn layers, the ones that will not come off the bones. We dress ourselves as otherme so that the self can relax.

Butoh takes us beyond ceasing to be a particular person. It takes us to becoming another — human or not, known or invented, present or ancestral. The body becomes a portal to spaces of mystery, where everything human dances with the non-human. Present and ancestral. Identity, not destroyed, but transformed into a vessel to reach another shore.

The Ni space is the space where all identities are equally possible. Neither one’s own nor another’s — only the movement between them. This dance happens in a place where all things are essentially the same.
