I am your dream, your future, your life and your death.
Rafaela and Matilde
My word is wonder.
You obey my command, for I am Order.
I am morality and virtue.
I am the voice of desire that lays you low.
ORIGINS
iMythos arose as a research and artistic-creation project conceived by Rafaela Bidarra in co-creation with Matilde Javier Ciria in 2014. It was born as a continuation of the line begun with “Corpo em crise”, an award-winning piece at MITEU and the FATAL Festival. After a creative process developed between Spain and Portugal, the show premiered in 2016 at the Ripollesdansa festival in Ripoll, Spain.
iMythos explores the function of ancient myths today and the new myths arising in the digital era, using butoh dance as scenic language within dramatic theatrical structures. The work addresses the conflict between myth and reason characteristic of the 21st century, seeking to integrate dualities of existence (life/death, masculine/feminine, light/darkness) through the body.
The project examines how technology modifies our perception of reality, becoming an object of almost religious worship and generating new contemporary myths that the show explores and questions.
Structure
iMythos takes as its basis the structure of Joseph Campbell’s “monomyth” (Departure, Initiation and Return), seeking parallels between ancient mythology and contemporary issues. Butoh dance functions as the main language, allowing the unconscious to express itself through the body via a direct, sensory experience of reality.

SYNOPSIS
Neither myth nor reason.
We dance on the invisible border. The screen is our cave of shadows. The body remembers what the mind forgets.
We built the machine and now it builds us. We neither control nor are free. We move our fingers over the cold surface that devours our attention, while an invisible force decides what we see, what we feel.
Creators turned into creation.
In this empty space, turned into a sacred place, bodies dance an ancient alphabet with hands that obey luminous crystals. Myth breathes beneath the digital skin. The old divinities hide behind binary codes we thought we mastered but that now possess us.
iMythos is a journey where the ancient and the new recognize each other as mirrors, between worlds, caught in an eternal cycle of departure, initiation and return.
We control in order to be controlled. We create in order to be created.
What do we seek in technology if not the same thing we sought in the stars?
