ni.butoh · between worlds
dance of the unnameable
dancing what only poetry can name
Before water, before lightning, before madness, there is a body that dances.
Matilde
Butoh is a dance of life and of freedom. It represents nothing: it lets something happen in the body. Neither theatre nor dance, and yet both. And you do not move — you are moved. The dance appears when whoever is dancing stops producing it.
ni.butoh is my own vision of this dance, which I have been developing since 2008: emptying yourself so the dance can emerge, inhabiting the paradox, ceasing to be yourself, reaching past the possible. Here is the whole map →
Dance of the unnameable is that practice uncut. It does not come in through a theme — water, the mask, lightning — but through wherever the body asks to enter that day. It is the workshop for finding out what all this is from the inside: the fundamentals, the state, the listening.
That is why it has no closed programme. Content and form are made anew each time: from the group that gathers, the space where it happens, the time we have, and whatever is going on outside — the political, the social, whatever each person carries in from the street. None of it is left at the door.
Come without knowing what you are coming for.
what we’ll work on
- Psychophysical training: relaxation, relaxed tension, listening to the body
- Emptying: to stop producing the dance so you can be moved
- Sensitivity and imagination: perceiving the imperceptible, giving body to the invisible
- Transformation: letting the body be matter, time and life before it is a person
- Guided improvisation — alone, in a group, and with an outside eye
who it’s for
For all bodies: the only requirement is to be able to beat and breathe. If you have no experience, this is the way in to ni.butoh. If you have already done thematic workshops, it is a chance to come back to the fundamentals from another angle. It works especially well with mixed groups.
