Dancing since 2015 without knowing how. The Iberian butoh community is still learning itself.
Butoh in the Iberian Peninsula
Alma Negra is a platform dedicated to the research, dissemination, creation and exhibition of butoh dance in the Iberian Peninsula. A question beating at its centre: how is butoh transformed when it comes into contact with our society, our bodies, our memories?
Co-founded and co-directed by Matilde J Ciria together with Jonathan Martineau, Alma Negra has spent more than ten years generating gatherings where that question can be asked collectively.
Each edition has its own character: some are expanded in format, others are concentrated and intense. What does not change is the will to create a space where butoh is not an object of exhibition but a living tool of research.
