Where the international butoh community gathers, works and lives together.
origin
For decades, the eX…it! festival was the key gathering of the international butoh community. When Yumiko Yoshioka and Delta Ra’i decided to close it, a hollow opened up. It needed to be filled.
BIG is born from that need. Not as a formal continuation, but as the organic response of a community that still needed a space for living together, research and collective creation around butoh.
The first edition took place in 2024 at Schloss Bröllin, Germany. A fourteen-day gathering: workshops with international masters, performances, collective creation processes, and the shared life that makes everything else possible.

BIG is fourteen days of workshops, communal living, research and collective creation. Between 70 and 120 participants from all over the world share space, time and practice with eight leading international choreographers. The process culminates in a public performance: the result of what happens when a large group of bodies immerses itself for two weeks in the same language.
BIG is not a festival of consumption. What you gain is not a catalogue of techniques but a network of bonds that lasts longer than the gathering.

In the in-between years, miniBIG. The format compresses, the focus sharpens. A more concentrated, more intense immersion, centred on research: more hours of dance per day, five international choreographers, and free jams every night to continue what the day has opened.
Time shrinks and practice expands.
Same essence, different choreography.
