That which you danced before being born and will dance after you die.

BUTOH INNATO

AULA NOSTRA

Aula Nostra —innate butoh training— was founded in 2019 by Matilde J. Ciria and Jonathan Martineau in Madrid. The training arises from the confluence of Matilde’s ni.butoh and Jonathan’s Art of Being Born, creating a unique methodology that seeks to become dance through thought in movement.

The pieces of Aula Nostra are born from the training process: they are not the result of a commission or an external production, but the distillation of months of collective research. What you see is what happens when a group of people learn to dance together without yet knowing where they are going.

SEASON 2020/21

2019-2020The year it all began, and which the pandemic swept away before we could see where it was going.

2020-2021 — The first full year. Three showings, three spaces, three ways of understanding that dance does not need a theatre to happen.

SIN H

End-of-year showing

June 2021 · Teatro Pradillo, Madrid

SYNOPSIS

The H is the ambassador of secrets, symbol of the inaudible and the invisible. It aspires to be inhaled, faithful to this part of language that wishes it had never separated from bodies. The H is the heroine of all the words that go unsaid, the mistress of the dreams that go unremembered. If the H did not exist in the alphabet, dance would be impossible.

Life without H is a horrible nightmare. Existence without silence is the torture of the contemporary citizen. Our dance is a silent rebellion, a dream beyond signification, a firm step into mystery.

Sin H culminates eight months of research at Aula Nostra. Innate butoh enjoys the formal freedom that each singular being needs in order to keep being born.

TERRENOS FANDANGOSOS

Second showing · Site-specific in nature

March 2021 · La Pedriza, Madrid

SYNOPSIS

The origin of fandango is uncertain. It evokes a dance of living movements. Nor are we quite clear about the purpose of the planet or the meaning of the terrain. Human life despairs in its bustle on the surface of the earth’s crust. The meaning of existence exists, Picasso told us on a night of revelry, but — warned the master painter — it has to catch you dancing. Since then we have not stopped falling into the infinite dance of fandango grounds, where for better or worse we question our dreams about the next movement.

Terrenos fandangosos: a two-hour journey through the landscapes of La Pedriza where the bodies reveal the dancing nature of the scenery.

EL RESTO ES TODO, LO NORMAL

First showing · Unconventional spaces

December 2020 · La Neomudejar, Madrid

SYNOPSIS

In the bathroom mirror, reality is an aberration born in the accumulated nightmares of all my mothers. The world blurs through the bus windows while thousands of brains parade about in their mortal machines. I can feel breakfast sliding down the slides of my misery. Dysentery. Anchovies. Here again where I would never have been had I not fallen in love. And I return to the basement; madness has taken hold of the surface. I drown in your eyes while you die of joy (were I to drown in your eyes, you would die of joy). The rest is all that matters.
